Best Length for Instagram Reels Engagement
The best length for Instagram Reels engagement is 2 to 3 minutes, because Reels of that length get about 65% more comments and about 32% more likes per view than 15 to 30 second Reels, with no drop in views. These numbers come from our study of over 7,200 Reels from more than 1,200 creators, in which we compared Reels of different lengths from the same creator.
Key takeaways
- Reels get about the same number of views at any length up to three minutes.
- Longer Reels get more engagement per view, and comments rise fastest. Reels of 2 to 3 minutes get about 65% more comments and about 32% more likes per view than 15 to 30 second Reels.
- Reels under 15 seconds get the fewest comments per view, about 21% fewer than 15 to 30 second Reels.
- Reels over three minutes get about 40% fewer views.
Does Reel length affect views or the algorithm?
Reel length made almost no difference to views, as long as the Reel stayed under three minutes. In our study, creators got about the same number of views on a Reel whether the Reel ran for under 15 seconds or for 2 to 3 minutes. The chart below shows the views for each Reel length. The dotted line marks the views of a 15 to 30 second Reel, which is the comparison point we use throughout this article.

As you can see, the bars stay close to the dotted line all the way from under 15 seconds to 2 to 3 minutes. This means there is no best Reel length for the algorithm below three minutes, and a longer Reel doesn't cost you views.
The last bar is the one exception. Reels over three minutes got far fewer views, and we'll come back to that drop when we cover how long a Reel can be.
What length gets the most engagement on Instagram Reels?
As we just saw, Reels get about the same views at every length up to three minutes. Because the views stay the same, a Reel that gets more comments and likes per view also gets more comments and likes overall.
Longer Reels did get more comments and likes per view, and Reels of 2 to 3 minutes got the most. The chart below shows how many more comments and likes each length got per view than a 15 to 30 second Reel, and the table underneath gives the exact numbers.

| Reel length | Comments per view | Likes per view |
|---|---|---|
| Under 15 seconds | 21% fewer | 8% fewer |
| 15–30 seconds | Comparison point | Comparison point |
| 30–45 seconds | 6% more | 6% more |
| 45–60 seconds | 23% more | 9% more |
| 60–90 seconds | 29% more | 19% more |
| 90–120 seconds | 53% more | 25% more |
| 2–3 minutes | 65% more | 32% more |
Comments per view rose with every step up in length. Reels of 45 to 60 seconds got about 23% more comments per view than 15 to 30 second Reels, and Reels of 60 to 90 seconds got about 29% more. The biggest gains came after the 90-second mark, where Reels of 90 to 120 seconds got about 53% more comments per view and Reels of 2 to 3 minutes got about 65% more.
Likes per view also rose with length, but more slowly. Reels of 60 to 90 seconds got about 19% more likes per view than 15 to 30 second Reels, and Reels of 2 to 3 minutes got about 32% more. One likely reason for both patterns is that a longer Reel gives your audience more to react to and more to say.
The shortest Reels got the least engagement of any length. Reels under 15 seconds got about 21% fewer comments and about 8% fewer likes per view than 15 to 30 second Reels. A 7-second Reel falls into this group.
These results were the same for smaller and larger accounts. Creators with under 100,000 followers, creators with 100,000 to 1 million followers and accounts with millions of followers all got more comments and likes per view on their longer Reels. In each of those three groups, Reels of 2 to 3 minutes got at least 60% more comments per view than 15 to 30 second Reels.
The best Reel length for each goal
So how long should an Instagram Reel be for your account? The ideal Reel length depends on what you want the Reel to do for you. Here's the length we'd choose for each goal.
- For reach, use any length up to three minutes. Views stayed about the same across all of those lengths, so pick the length your content needs.
- For likes, aim for 60 seconds to three minutes. Reels in that range got about 19% to 32% more likes per view than 15 to 30 second Reels.
- For comments and conversation, aim for 90 seconds to three minutes. Reels in that range got about 53% to 65% more comments per view than 15 to 30 second Reels.
- For a quick visual payoff, stay under 15 seconds. A Reel that short is fine when your content truly is a single moment, such as one reveal or one joke. Expect about a fifth fewer comments per view than a 15 to 30 second Reel, although a question in your caption can help make up the difference.
Longer Reels came out ahead for every engagement goal on this list. That raises an obvious question, which is how long is too long.
How long can Instagram Reels be in 2026?
Instagram lets you record and edit videos up to 20 minutes with Reels. The limit that matters for your reach is much lower, though. The same Help Center page states that "Reels over 3 minutes won’t be recommended to new audiences."
That rule matches what we found. Reels over three minutes got about 40% fewer views than 15 to 30 second Reels, which is the drop in the last bar of the views chart above. Most creators who posted a Reel over three minutes saw that drop on their own account. Of the 42 creators in our study who posted a Reel over three minutes, 31 got fewer views on that Reel than on their shorter Reels.
This makes 2 to 3 minutes the sweet spot. A Reel of that length gets the most comments and likes per view without giving up any views.

Are 90-second Reels too long?
No, 90-second Reels are not too long. Reels of 90 to 120 seconds got about the same views as 15 to 30 second Reels and about 53% more comments per view.
Is a 7-second Reel too short?
A 7-second Reel can work for a single visual moment, but it is too short if your goal is comments. Reels under 15 seconds got the fewest comments per view of any length in our study.
