How to Go Viral on Instagram With Outbound Commenting

“Our first success wasn’t actually creating video content … it was from commenting on other people’s videos.”

That's how Zaria Parvez, then Duolingo's Senior Global Social Media Manager, described the brand's early progress on TikTok in a Contagious interview. By commenting on other people's videos, Duolingo gave viewers more opportunities to encounter its mascot. What the team learned from those interactions helped inform the videos that followed.

Commenting might seem like an unusual place to start when you're figuring out how to go viral on Instagram. But someone else's video already has an audience, and your comment can become something that audience enjoys and engages with. Outbound commenting means deliberately finding those opportunities and joining the conversation through your brand's account.

At Sociable AI, we've helped brands with outbound commenting and tracked more than 10,000 of their comments. In this guide, we'll explain what we've learned from that work and the commenting strategy we use.

Figuring out where to comment

Start by looking for videos that are relevant to your audience and likely to go viral. Your comment needs enough people to see it, but those people should also have a reason to be interested in your brand.

For example, suppose you sell energy drinks to people who work out. Fitness videos would be a reasonable place to start because the people watching may also be interested in your product. The video doesn't need to mention energy drinks. A gym skit or workout video could give you an opportunity to participate in a conversation your potential customers already enjoy.

You'll often need to balance audience relevance with the size of the opportunity. A video that's popular with a broad audience might have little connection to your customers. At the other extreme, a video about a very specific topic might reach exactly the right people but attract little attention. Look for videos with room to reach a larger audience while still having a clear connection to the people you want to reach.

For example, Sociable AI found this video of a man making Oreo ice cream tacos within the first 30 minutes of posting. Imagine you're commenting as a packaged ice cream brand trying to reach ice cream lovers. A creative ice cream recipe gives you a clear reason to expect audience overlap, and Discovery found the video early enough for you to consider it before waiting to see whether it went viral. We'll use this video to work through a comment below.

How to find relevant videos in your niche

The useful distinction here is between what your audience posts and what your audience watches. Someone who buys your energy drink might post holiday photos while spending much of their time watching fitness content. You want to find the videos that hold that person's attention.

Begin with a hypothesis about those interests. For the energy drink brand, you could start with workout routines and gym humor, then explore which topics seem to attract the audience you have in mind. There are two straightforward ways to find those videos.

  1. Search Instagram using keywords for the topic. Look through the videos you find and read the comments. The way people respond can help you judge whether the conversation fits your audience. Use what you find to make your next search more specific.
  2. Follow accounts that consistently publish relevant, popular videos. When a video looks promising, visit the creator's profile and look at their other posts. An account that regularly reaches the audience you're interested in is worth following for future commenting opportunities.

As you watch and interact with relevant videos, your Reels recommendations can become more useful for finding similar content. Be deliberate about what you engage with. Your goal is to develop a feed that resembles the interests of your audience, so finding somewhere to comment becomes part of your regular browsing.

How to find viral videos early

Finding a popular video is easy once everyone has seen it. Finding that video while it is still beginning to take off takes more attention.

For a manual approach, start with the relevant creators you've already found and turn on notifications for their posts or Reels. Prioritize creators whose videos have repeatedly performed well. When a notification arrives, watch the new video and comment promptly if you have something worth adding. A creator's history gives you a reason to pay attention, though each new post still needs to be judged on its own.

Our timing research gives some context for why arriving early matters. In an observational study of 325 outbound comments, comments posted within the first hour captured 3.3 times the median share of the parent post's likes compared with comments posted 1–4.4 hours after publication. We compared comment likes with the likes on the video itself to account for differences in how much attention the videos received.

The study covered 14.1% of the June–July cohort with sufficient tracking data, and we estimated parent-post likes between recorded observations. The association supports paying attention to timing, but it doesn't establish that posting earlier caused the difference. The posts and comments in each group also differed.

Notifications give you a practical way to act on that finding. The drawback is that you need to be available when creators post, and you still have to decide whether each video is relevant enough to comment on.

How to write a comment that will earn likes

For this approach, aim to write something your audience finds relatable or funny. A comment that captures a familiar experience gives viewers a reason to respond, and humor can make an otherwise ordinary observation more enjoyable.

Learning what your audience finds funny takes practice. Spend time reading popular comments on videos that have already taken off. Look at the moment each comment responds to and consider why viewers liked it. A joke might point out something everyone noticed, or connect what happened in the video to an experience those viewers recognize.

Then try making the same kind of observation on a different video. The wording should come from the video you're watching. Copying a successful comment without its original context usually loses the reason it was funny in the first place.

We used this approach in our analysis of 101 viral Instagram comments, which breaks down real examples into strategies you can try yourself.

Let's return to the video example about Oreo ice cream tacos. The Reel shows a man making his own version of a recipe shown by another creator, and his version looks surprisingly good. We used Sociable AI to generate some comments without configuring a brand voice first. The initial suggestions included the following.

  • “16 Oreos "about" - bro eyeballed his way into a dessert”
  • “the freezer just became a coworker in this recipe”
  • “taco shell was never the star and everyone knows it”

The suggestions gave us a starting point, but none was quite what we wanted. After regenerating several times, we found an idea we liked.

The comment captures the surprise of seeing how good his version looks. Viewers have just seen both versions, so the comparison is easy to recognize. Pole vaulting adds an unexpected image to the familiar idea of setting a bar, exaggerating how far the second creator exceeded that standard.

We'd make a small edit to simplify the reference to the original creator.

the first guy set the bar and he just pole vaulted over it

The joke stays intact, while “the first guy” refers directly to the order in which the creators appear. This is the version we'd choose for our hypothetical ice cream brand. Regenerating helped us find an observation we liked, and editing made the wording fit how we'd say it.

Avoid mentioning your product unless the connection is especially relevant or makes the comment funnier. Your username and profile picture already identify your brand. Give people something they enjoy reading, and let anyone who's curious explore your profile.

How to track outbound commenting ROI

The most immediate result you can measure is the number of likes your comments receive. If you're tracking manually, keep a record of each comment and the video it appeared on, then return to record the like count and the date you checked it. Keeping the individual results lets you see which comments contributed to your total and which kinds of videos were worth your time.

Profile visits can help you understand whether more people are taking an interest in your account while you're commenting. Record the profile visits available in your professional dashboard for consistent reporting periods, alongside the likes your comments receive during those periods. Building that record makes it easier to compare activity over time.

If comment engagement and profile visits rise together, that's a pattern worth investigating. Your own posts and other marketing activity can also bring people to your profile, so the comparison alone doesn't show how many visits came from outbound comments. Keep track of major changes in your other activity when reviewing the results.

These metrics help you assess attention and interest. To evaluate the financial return, you would also need to connect the activity to business outcomes and account for the time and money you spent. Even before you can make that connection, tracking comment performance gives you a way to refine where you comment and what you write.

Turn hours of commenting into minutes with Discovery

Doing all of this manually can become frustrating. You need to find suitable videos and catch them early, then come up with a comment that fits. Afterward, you still have to return to the comments to see how they performed.

Sociable AI's Discovery brings that work into one place. You can find relevant videos that are likely to go viral when you're ready to comment, making the process easier to fit into your schedule. Your Sociable AI agent helps you draft comments in your brand's voice, and you can regenerate or edit the suggestions until you're happy with what you've written.

Once you've published your comments, the dashboard lets you follow comment likes and profile visits over time. Having those results available together makes it easier to review your activity and report on progress without maintaining the same records by hand.
